Red Sox Feel 'No Urgency' To Deal For Hamels

Feb 26, 2015 4:46 PM

The Boston Red Sox continue to monitor Cole Hamels and the Philadelphia Phillies, but "there's no sense of urgency" to trade for the left-hander, according to a source.

Boston has been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Hamels since last season.

Hamels recently told USA Today that he would prefer being dealt to a contender.

Another source said the Red Sox are known to have made their interest in Hamels clear to the Phillies.

Papelbon Interested In Possible Trade To Blue Jays

Feb 27, 2015 10:13 AM

Jonathan Papelbon made some interesting comments Thursday when asked about a potential trade from the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Milwaukee Brewers have re-signed Francisco Rodriguez, removing one potential landing spot for Papelbon, who has said that he'd prefer to pitch for a winner.

The Toronto Blue Jays have also been linked to the right-hander.

“Yes, Toronto, interests me -- if it interests Ruben [Amaro]," he said. "I know some of the guys on their coaching staff. They're a good team. If Ruben can do a deal with them, I'd be interested."

Papelbon is making $13 million this season and has a vesting option for $13 million for 2016.

Ethier Wants To Start, Open To Trade

Feb 25, 2015 4:58 PM

Andre Ethier would prefer to play elsewhere if there isn't an everyday job open for him on the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers traded Matt Kemp this offseason, but that doesn't appear to have solved their outfield issues.

Ethier, who broke in with the club in 2006, is the longest-tenured member of the Dodgers.

The Dodgers project to start Carl Crawford, Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig in the outfield.

"You're not wishing for it ever to end, but sometimes that opportunity takes you somewhere else," Ethier said. "I'm not going to do anything to sit here and force it. Hopefully it works itself out."

Desmond Won't Be Distracted By Pending Free Agency

Feb 24, 2015 8:29 AM

Ian Desmond will be a free agent next winter, but the Washington Nationals infielder insists that he won't be distracted this season.

"I owe it to everybody here to give my 100 percent concentration and that's what I'm going to do," Desmond said. "All the other stuff is really not going to be talked about. It's time to go."

The Nationals and Desmond's representatives aren't believed to have had any significant talks on a new deal.

It was reported this offseason that Desmond was nearly traded to the New York Mets in a three-team deal.

"You can't really put too much stock into it because I never really heard from Mike [Rizzo]," Desmond said. "I never heard from anybody. The only thing I did heard was [manager] Matt [Williams] calling me and telling me, 'You are not getting traded.'"

Navarro Still Wants Blue Jays To Trade Him

Feb 23, 2015 4:12 PM

Dioner Navarro hasn't changed his stance. The veteran catcher wants the Toronto Blue Jays to trade him.

Navarro first requested a trade when the club signed Russell Martin.

The 31-year-old says he holds no grudges and will work hard this spring, hoping an opportunity comes his way.

"I don't know when did it go wrong, if anything did go wrong," Navarro said of his time with Toronto. "I'm just going to be ready and do my job."

Martin signed an $82 million, five-year contract this offseason.

Navarro, who hit 274 with 12 home runs and 59 runs batted in last season, faces being a designated hitter and backup catcher with the Jays.

Red Sox May Not Be Inclined To Deal Bradley, Jr.

Feb 23, 2015 8:09 AM

The Boston Red Sox have a crowded outfield, but they may not be inclined to trade Jackie Bradley, Jr.

Bradley was the club's everyday center fielder as a rookie last season, but hit .198/.265/.266 and was replaced by Mookie Betts and Rusney Castillo.

According to a league source, the Atlanta Braves had interest in Bradley earlier this offseason, but the two sides couldn't agree on a deal.

Bradley is Boston's best defensive outfielder and has Minor League options available.

Hamels Hopes To Be Traded To Contender

Feb 20, 2015 8:06 AM

Cole Hamels would prefer to be traded to a contending team.

"I want to go to a place where I can win again," Hamels told Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Hamels wanted to be clear that he's not demanding a trade, but expressed his desire to win.

"I know it's not going to happen here," the left-hander said.

The Philadelphia Phillies are believed to be asking for a lot for Hamels.

Sandberg: Howard To Start At First For Phillies

Feb 18, 2015 4:49 PM

Ryan Howard will start at first base for the Philadelphia Phillies to begin this season, according to Ryne Sandberg.

The Phillies have been attempting to rebuild and trade Howard.

Howard has never fully rebounded after tearing his left Achilles tendon during the final out of Philadelphia's 2011 season.

"Right now he's here to prepare for the season as one of the guys," Sandberg said.

"If he gets to where he's hitting 30-35 home runs, which is good home runs for this day and age of baseball, he can help us win games this year. To see him in the spring and see him prepare and have him get ready, he's here. Right now, unless he gets unseated he's the first baseman."

Phillies Remain Focused On Getting 'Younger And More Athletic'

Feb 18, 2015 7:57 AM

The Philadelphia Phillies have shuffled their roster a bit this offseason, but they have more work to do.

They traded Jimmy Rollins, Marlon Byrd and Antonio Bastardo and watched A.J. Burnett and Kyle Kendrick leave.

However, the Phillies still have numerous veterans on the roster including Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jonathan Papelbon and Cliff Lee.

"We didn't necessarily expect to make a full transition in a two- or three-month period of time," Ruben Amaro said. "The process doesn't start on Oct. 1 and it doesn't end on Feb. 15. It continues. We'll continue to look at ways to get younger and more athletic. There's still a lot of work to be done.

"I think we've made some pretty decent progress as far as bringing some players and some talent into our system, particularly at the upper levels, that we hope will provide the depth that is necessary to move us forward. It's not a three-month process. The process is going to take a little longer and we understand that we have those challenges. We'll continue to work on that transition."
